Volunteering Your Time to Worthy Causes

Posted in Political Activism on December 5th, 2009

The sense of brotherhood that develops among volunteers can unite their community, and naturally it will fulfill the volunteers’ goal of aiding those incapable of supporting themselves. The obvious problem is that adjusting your workload so that you’re free to volunteer often actually squanders time that could be put to better use elsewhere. Companies like Adaptive Marketing LLC, a firm from Connecticut whose shopping programs, including At Home Rewards, help to enrich consumers, have stepped up to become points of organization enabling their employees to make time for reaching out.

If you were asked for examples of company-backed volunteer work, you’d most likely talk in terms of giving blood, maybe a Christmas call for donations, and no more, but this is simply no longer true. Shoe recycling initiatives and more active work like tree planting days - these and others are among the activities that have been made possible for its staff by Adaptive Marketing. By centralizing the organization individual initiatives blossomed into events, with specific locations, times and dates noted ahead of time to make time management easy for volunteers. Naturally, it’s important to let volunteers back activities according to their own interests. Companies who provide this kind of service to their community like Adaptive Marketing, present their employees with a wide range of local events. Earlier projects have ranged between a wide variety of areas including aid and assistance for children and young adults, environmental programs, and events related to arts and culture. Often, the more they enjoy it, the more productive they are, so by providing so many initiatives Adaptive Marketing guarantee that their members of staff will make progress on all the initiatives.

A regularly scheduled day or a one-off event - these are the most common ways for a firm to arrange volunteer initiatives like these, maybe at a local school or the homeless shelter in town. There will probably be those who claim they haven’t the time, but even they can usually commit to the public library’s sale of used books.

Turning their profit-making skills to help the community around them is a practice with a long history at many commercial enterprises. The good worksefforts of those who work at Adaptive Marketing spread important goodwill around their home base. One thing volunteer work is sure to do is leave your employees feeling good about themselves, creating a motivated company.

Women Fight Back against Ocella

Posted in Legal Issues, Political Activism, University of Health on December 3rd, 2009

Mass tort status is being considered in the lawsuits that have been filed against the makers of the birth control pills Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella. This is largely because of the increasing number of cases being filed across the country where victims claim stroke and other serious health problems caused by taking Yasmin or Ocella. Yaz side effects extend from ischemic stroke or heart attack, to pulmonary embolism and other blood clot related injuries.

Mass Tort is simply civil lawsuit that extends to a number of complainants. This action is taken against one or more corporate litigants in court. Unlike a class action where a number of people take it upon themselves to bring forth litigation jointly, in mass tort the original plaintiffs and law firms use mass media outlets to reach other possible plaintiffs that they would not ordinarily meet. Those TV ads and newspaper solicitations wondering if you are a loved one have been effected by a particular product are the result of a mass tort ruling.

Women taking Yasmin, Yaz or Ocella to avoid becoming pregnant or to treat PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) or severe acne have reportedly sustained extreme injury to their health and wellness. Although most pharmaceuticals present some form of side effects, the main event surrounding Yaz seems to be that the original commercials downplayed the health risks and side effects. This attracted users to the product that may not have taken it otherwise had they been properly informed about the risks posed by Ocella, Yasmin and Yaz.

Ways to Find Time to Volunteer Your Time

Posted in Political Activism on October 29th, 2009

Volunteering; a bridge to a closer community, and supporting your local needy. The obvious problem is that arranging to be free to volunteer often actually wastes time that could be put to much better use. And volunteering is more fun with your friends from work getting involved right along with you. By way of tackling this issue, some companies are integrating organizing points encouraging their employees to work for the community. One of the more significant examples is Adaptive Marketing LLC of Connecticut who developed financial and shopping benefits programs like Shopping Essentials Plus (MVQ*SHOPESSPLUS) to consumers.

Fortunately, company-supported volunteer work is more than once-a-year charitable giving. Looking at just one company, Adaptive Marketing has provided its staff members with chances to get involved in everything from tennis shoe recycling campaigns to local tree-planting events. When Adaptive Marketing began central organization individual initiatives developed into larger programs, with specific times, dates, and locations noted in advance to make time management easy for those signing up. It’s hardly volunteering if there’s no opportunity to select projects, naturally. Businesses involved in this like Adaptive Marketing, present their staff with a diverse list of projects. Prior projects have ranged between areas as diverse as education for children and young adults, environmental awareness activities, and events related to arts and culture. Adaptive Marketing’s staff have so much to choose from that they’re sure to choose a project they’ll enjoy taking part in, ensuring they’ll spend their time productively and happily. If companies ask their staffers to consider volunteering at homeless shelters, it is frequently to help with a single event or a regularly scheduled task. No matter how little time you have, there’s going to be some activity to match, which means time is no obstacle to volunteering. We’re sure that by now you know a number of examples of companies supporting the people who live nearby. A sense of community goodwill comes from the activities of Adaptive Marketing’s employees, and the employees of companies like it, through company-sponsored initiatives like the ones touched on above. Another upside is, one of the benefits of volunteer work is feeling better about yourself — a positive feeling that leaves not just the staffer but the whole company feeling better.

Bruce Wasserstein’s $25 Million Endowment to Harvard

There is no greater honor for a loyal and prominent Harvard alumnus like Bruce Wasserstein than to have an entire academic wing named after him. Lazard CEO Bruce Wasserstein’s largesse had a large portion of Harvard Law School’s Northwest Corner Complex renamed to Wasserstein Hall after he bestowed a $25 million donation to his alma mater. Bruce Wasserstein graduated from Harvard Business School’s MBA Class ‘71 and J.D. Class ‘70 of the Harvard Law School.

The 61-year old billionaire banker and businessperson is one of Harvard’s most prominent alumni; one who has been making waves in the financial industry for years now.

Since 1980, Bruce Wasserstein has orchestrated some of the most successful and profitable mergers and acquisitions (M&A) that now total to $250 billion, including KKR’s acquisition of RJR Nabisco, Stanley Morgan’s buyout of Dean Witter, and Time’s acquisition by Warner Bros. Prior to his work at Lazard, Ltd, Wasserstein launched a notable career in banking at First Boston Corp and co-founded Wasserstein Perella & Co before it was bought by Germany’s Dresdner Bank. At present, Bruce Wasserstein serves as chairman of Wasserstein & Co LP, and is a busy member of the board of directors of Harry & David Holdings, Inc.

Advances in IHC Resulted in More Accurate Diagnosis of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Posted in Medical Hall, Political Activism, University of Health on May 16th, 2009

Mesothelioma is a rare and fast moving growth where no effective treatment exists even with the finding of several potential genetic targets. The late stages of Malignant pleural mesothelioma diagnosis and the period of time that exists connects exposures and diagnosis have made it difficult to fully evaluate the role of risk factors and their downstream molecular effects.

Many health centres are beginning to see an increasing amount of patients that are suffering from peritoneal cancer. Because of this, pathologists studying the case are given a number of problems, which can be separated into those encountered in distinguishing between cancer of the mesothelium and benign changes and those seen in setting apart mesotheliomas from other sorts of epithelial and tissue tumors that connect. Immunohistochemistry performs a major role in diagnosis, nevertheless it should be interpreted in regards to the medical setting and radiological features, and understanding the vast morphological differences that exist in cancer of the mesothelium.

Malignant mesothelioma is a cancer affecting the serosal cavities, an anatomical location that is frequently affected by mets, mostly from primary cancers of the breast, ovary and lung. Advances in immunohistochemistry have lead to improved diagnostic sensitivity and precision in the differential diagnosis in regards to histological and cytological material. Recently, the researchers used high throughput technology to the classification of new markers that might assist in differentiating cancer of the mesothelium from ovarian and peritoneal serous carcinoma, closely related histogenesis found in tumors and antigenic profile. Together with the improved tools available for cancer of the serosa diagnosis, knowing the biology of malignant mesothelioma has been accruing in recent years.

Does the Truth Matter?

Posted in Political Activism on May 10th, 2009

After listening to the Executive Branch -VS- Media all month I now realize that our democracy is not rocket science. The issue is who knew what and when did they know it concerning the Iraqi war, right? Well, let’s start with the Executive Branch of our government and the agencies that report to them like the CIA, FBI, and IRS. President George W. Bush stated that he was a “War President” nationwide.

The CIA and the FBI are responsible for the information to justify the United States having a war for the “War President.” The day President George W. Bush stated, nationwide “Mission Accomplished” he was not talking to the American Troops who was fighting in Iraqi, he was talking to the CIA and the FBI. The Executive Branch also stated that other nation’s intelligence had the same false information as America CIA and FBI. So do not blame the executive branch for getting it wrong and killing over 2000 of our sons and daughters. However, George W. Bush was seen worldwide confirming false intelligent when he gave congratulatory medals to the overseers of the FBI and CIA. Does the truth matter? Readers, you make the call based on keeping yourselves informed.

Now let me talk about the media again. They appear to be stuck on stupid. This month all they wanted to do is tell the American citizens what they should have told us in 2002. Each and every one of them knew then what they are reporting now. However, they are just like brawlers who want to just keep confusion going. They are not interested in keeping this country safe from within or from without. They are more interested in with-holding important information from the Americans citizens, which would keep the United States of America free.

The media could destroy a person’s reputation along with our nation. I am not impressed and neither are the American citizens. All of a sudden the media has diarrhea of the mouth when it comes to the Iraqi war. Too many of our American and Iraqi children have died because the media kept silent during the presidential campaign. A military spokesperson stated to the media, “We are now fighting foreign terrorist.” Aren’t our American Troops foreigners in a foreign land or does America own Iraq? Does the truth matter? Readers you make the call based on keeping yourselves informed.

Now, let’s talk about the IRS who happens to be in the pocket of the Executive Branch. Recently, I heard on mainstream media that the IRS is going after a pastor for preaching against the Executive Branch and the war in Iraqi. Well this is not the first time neither will it be the last time. Remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? They went after him also. The IRS is the Saddam Hussein of American government agencies; unless you take them out of power the American citizens, pastors and representatives will forever be terrorized by this government agency.

How is it possible for American democracy to create an agency with unlimited power and control over its citizens? Well I will tell you how, just like our representatives created new districts to keep them in office, Congress has now created the Homeland Security Act and the Patriot Act by putting fear in our citizens. These two laws will now give law enforcement agencies unlimited power and control to all of our personal information just by stating to a judge that a law-abiding citizen “maybe connected with a terrorist suspect.” This statement alone will allow a judge to authorize personal information on every American citizen including; government representatives; to be given to the department of law enforcement.

Now you might say, like my state representative stated to me, “If you are law-abiding you have nothing to worry about.” Well if you believe that… talk to all the law-abiding Asians who were placed in an interment camp in America. Tell that to the African Americans who were lynched by some law enforcement agents with sheets over their heads. The FBI has the proof of this if you care to research my statements. Tell this to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks who went to jail for protesting unjust laws. Remember America our FBI, CIA and the IRS accused and treated the Black Panthers of being insurgents in America, but not the KKK. I could go on but I won’t because I believe my readers get the point. Law-Abiding means safety and protection to the European Americans in the United States. To the rest of the American citizens it is only a word. Does the truth matter? Readers you make the call based on keeping yourselves informed.

Finally, I say all of the United States watchmen (government agencies) are in Gods out-house, because they all knew what was going on while it was going on, and have failed to speak truth and shine light on evil powers and evil doers. Therefore, our nation is being destroyed from within not from without; remember the Roman Empire? This is just SAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! American terrorist have been in America since the beginning of our nation. Some terrorist we like and some we do not. Wake up American citizens and refocus our nation representatives to do the right thing for our children sake please. We must use our write in vote now, because the people who are running for office now are the rich and powerful and the working poor do not have the economics to pay for advertisement.

So let’s start picking people in our communities to run in the up coming county, state, and federal elections. Once we use our write in vote for people we know personally, they must over turn laws that make our children victims to old policies and laws; laws that keep them medicated, falsely labeled and warehoused in the criminal justice system. We must start now to teach and show our children that they are survivors of our mistakes so they will be the future men and women leaders of our nation that the whole world will respect again. What do we have left to lose my generation other than our CHILDREN? Wouldn’t it be funny to find out later that the terrorist the American military is fighting, to protect American citizens from; is our Government foreign and domestic policies? Does the Truth Matter? In this case the answer is yes!

Ideas Concerning Reform of the Disability System

Posted in Political Activism on May 8th, 2009

There’s an excellent website online published by a Dr. Holden, a former Disability Determination Services medical consultant. I couldn’t help but comment on one of the good doctor’s recent writings in which he makes several suggestions for disability evaluation reform. To get right to the point, Dr. Holden’s reform ideas seem to strongly revolve around the notions of upgrading the salaries of disability examiners and instituting a better medical training regimen for these workhorses of the disability system.

Dr. Holden’s points are, to some extent, on target. For starters, disability examiners don’t get enough medical training. As a former examiner myself, I don’t mind saying that. And I seriously question the entire concept of SDM’s (”single decision maker” examiners who can slap decisions on cases without the input of their unit medical consultants—-how crazy is that? Examiners are NOT doctors).

Dr. Holden also questions the soundness of utilizing lawyers–who are now wearing the hats of federal administrative law judges–to adjudicate “medical evaluation cases”. Personally, I never really understood just why it is that an ALJ (someone with legal training, not medical training) is necessarily needed to preside over disability hearings. Judges are not medical professionals and disability hearings are not legal court proceedings in the strictest sense. In fact, this is exactly why non attorneys are allowed to represent claimants at such hearings.

I really have no major problem with any of Dr. Holden’s core assertions. However, I guess it’s true that we are all, to some extent, limited by our experiences and this holds true for MD’s as well.

While Holden’s suggestion for more indepth medical training for DDS examiners is a good one, his suggestions for overall reform miss the REAL PROBLEM (IMO - just my opinion) with DDS. What’s that problem?

Here it is: DQB, or the disability quality branch. As all examiners, reps, judges, and CRs know, a percentage of completed DDS files are sent off to this unit to see if all the i’s are dotted and all the t’s have been properly crossed. And, interestingly enough, more cases that were MARKED FOR APPROVAL come back reversed i.e. overturned than vice-versa.

When a case is returned from DDS, it’s like a black mark for the disability examiner because it directly implies that he or she flubbed up. It’s a black mark for the unit supervisor because the return came back to his or her unit. And it’s a black mark for the dds administrators because the more DQB returns you get, the worse it makes your agency look.

So, human nature being what it is, what is the outcome at all dds locations in the good old USA?

It means that supervisors tend to exert an iron grip over the examiners in their units. It also means that supervisors will always lean more toward denials rather than approvals. And…if a case is one of “those” cases that is right on the line, you can be sure that the disability examiner won’t stick his or her neck out because the likelihood is that the unit supervisor will have to talk to the examiner about his or her decision-making ability, (i.e. imply to them that they better get in line with the program and/or potentially find a new job).

Now, this may not have occurred to Dr. Holden because he was not an examiner. And it may not have occurred to most reps because they, too, were never examiners (though some examiners later went on to become attorneys or non attorney reps). And it certainly would not occur to an SSA CR because, for all intents and purposes, they know very little about the actual disability evaluation process, aside from the mechanics of taking claims and then processing them once DDS is finished with the medical evaluation.

Of course, I am not saying that we need to fill the spots currently occupied by ALJ’s with level 3 disability examiners or SSA Disability Case managers (that is, if they ever actually created such a DCM position). I’m not saying we should get rid of the SDM program (though it wouldn’t bother me), or dispense with quality review. But, I do think it’s pretty plain that external quality review has had an insidious effect on DDS claims processing—–with disability claimants coming out the clear loser.

So, what’s the alternative to DQB? In all candor, I don’t know. But, regarding such issues (disability system reform from a “structural perspective”) perhaps that’s something that the brighter heads in NADR and NOSSCR should ponder and make proposals toward.

Computer Cyber virus attack from hackers

Posted in Political Activism on April 30th, 2009

Recently the CIA staged a practice simulation of a cyber attack used to take down the Internet. The simulated attack was called “Silent Horizons” and they learned quite a bit about what could happen if we fail to protect the flow of information. Now before you say no one could bring down the entire Internet. You are sadly mistaken, as we created it and mankind has those amongst us with the tools and brains to bring it all crashing down. I recommend you read up on the CIA report after it comes out on the Silent Horizon project and while you are at it; I recommend this book as well:

Tom Clancy’s “Net Force-CyberNation”

I would have to say this is a very provocative book and extremely interesting, story line and characters were interesting as well. Very high-tech thoughts on the future and things to come; I enjoyed it very much. It was interesting how the good guys, took shifts trying to catch the bad guys. Almost like zone defense in time. Since the techno geeks do not sleep and the enforcement officers do not work weekends, they trade off befriending these individuals by way of email, even though the bad guys who are really the good guys know it. The people in the story the new generation did not understand international property rights of information, similar to the Asian way of thinking in their culture. Surely this will be the cause of future wars and mist trust between government and people. The technology already is running away from the government now today as they attempt to stifle free enterprise, but as it has been said in the past you can lock up some ones body, but you cannot lock up their mind. In other words not everyone is motivated by money and the real thinkers and tinkerers will not stop simply because there is no money.

The Net Force is inept and cannot outsmart the outsmarters. The hackers were causing economic disruption and collecting more customers for their system and therefore be a member of their nation within the nation. This is an interesting idea. The difference between the RW “Real World” and VR “Virtual Reality World”. Where do you want to take your vacation? If it is in the RW, who pays for the roads if you are a member of the cyber nation and if you are a member of the RW, whose VR, which system are you on, and who can choose the rules? This is a great book, not the story line, not the characters, not the cover, but the thought provoking ideas and foresight. Best book I’ve read this year.

How the poor were lost.

Posted in Political Activism on April 26th, 2009

Copyright 2006 Vincent Wilmot

When the poor were the majority.

The poor in developed countries like the USA and UK are now a minority, though up to maybe the 1950’s or 1960’s they had been a majority.

While the poor were a majority their main problems were simply economic poverty and economic exploitation. Government bodies manned by the upper and middle classes understood this sufficiently to be able to handle the poor with some appropriateness, if not always entirely to the poor’s liking. The votes of the poor majority were basically sought with a policy mix of small economic titbits and nationalistic policies.

The poor becoming a minority.

In the USA by 1950, and the UK by 1960, growing economic prosperity saw the numbers of the poor begin to fall until soon they became a minority. This was helped by more enlightened government policy, and was good for the many that then escaped poverty. Unfortunately the remaining poor as a minority were to face seriously increased problems.

There were two main reasons why the modern minority poor in advanced countries faced increasing problems. The first was that the poor soon had more complex, though supposedly helpful, welfare systems applying to them and giving them new problems - and also as a minority they now also hit new minority social exclusion problems. The second main reason the modern poor in advanced countries faced increasing problems was that they became less seen and less understood by the governing upper and middle classes, so their governing became wildly inappropriate and plain wrong.

How affluent governments lost their poor.

When the poor in developed countries became a minority, democratic political parties began to see their votes as unnecessary, though the poor are a socially significant minority whose misgovernment can seriously undermine society.

Majority middle-class issues became prioritised, for example huge anti-tobacco-smoking resources being applied by government and employer bodies but much less on drunkenness, drug-taking or weapon-carrying - pushing many from cigarettes to these. Socially tobacco is a small undesirable but the available alternatives for the poor are really much worse. And some of the health problems of smoking may be due to inhaling cigarette lighter flints rather than inhaling tobacco.

All government, charity, employer and other bodies being now run by a middle-class having no real understanding of modern poor minority problems has led to many policies affecting the poor becoming totally inappropriate. And developed countries prioritising middle-class issues and worsening the position of their poor minority are in effect doing a Nero and ‘fiddling while Rome burns’, but their governments basically lost the poor.

Re-finding the poor.

In developed countries now, those producing policies are educated professionals with little or no experience of the poor today, and they may commonly have correct general theories but often be missing the correct practical detail needed for correct modern policy making for today’s minority poor. They urgently need to find and involve the tiny handful of street-wise professionals who somehow do happen to have substantial real experience of today’s poor themselves - but as yet they are totally unaware that this is needed.

Or if modern affluent middle-class government cannot find a way to better govern their poor and other minorities, then perhaps modern democratic government will demand less middle-class officials. Maybe a percentage of politicians should not be elected, but instead be randomly selected from elector lists ?

A Discourse on Liberty

Posted in Political Activism on April 24th, 2009

It is in the heart of every revolution, in the mind of every Humanitarian; it is attacked by every dictator, scorned by every politician; it is held in animosity by the enemy of the people; held as the most sacrilige by every tyrant and the most sacred by every freeman — it is the dream of a lover while they sleep, tossed and tumbled over their heart’s desire — it is the dirt under the fingernails of a worker, writhing with pain that their labors can feed their family — it has been taught by philosophers, it has been revered by wisemen… it is sought by the heart and cherished with memories by the mind: it is liberty.

Some have argued that it is the presence of others that limits our freedom. That it is the various wants of each man that create conflict, which lead to fighting and wars. In heeding to our natural instincts of survival and domination, mankind has erected torture chambers, built prisons, put bondages on the legs of individual thought, put chains on the hands of free inquiry. Every new method of persecution and oppression has not been left undone, left alone. It has been the taste of mankind to seek wealth and glory, whether it leads others to lives of misery and vice or not. So, it has been the argument of every philosopher, of every statesmen, that the presence of many men, and therefore, the presence of many interests, has been the greatest obstacle to liberty. To some extent, my reasoning ability must consent to this argument, that it has some merit, that to some extent, it is true. But to tell half the story, would be as much a lie as distorting it. A man would be a slave if he were alone. Deprive any person from the society of their fellows, and they will know what true pain is. For no man can be free, when he knows that he cannot stimulate the emotions of another, by exciting passions of either lust or affection, by interesting another in stories and legends of times past. If a man were to speak his heart, were to utter the memories his mind had collected, and if there were no one to hear him, then he would be truly a lone. The philosopher will call him free, but he would still be a slave to pain. The statesman will call him in liberty, but he would be in the shackles of loneliness and depression. There are few individuals who would prefer life without their lovers, over death with them. So, it must be true… the man who lives with nothing but his reflection, may very well be cursed to a miserable life. Just as the man who lives with thoughtless and brutish persecutors, will be cursed to a similar life…. liberty, therefore, is neither the presence or lack of presence of persons, but your relationship to them. It is this which cannot be denied, as it fulfills the premises of reason, it serves the honesty of compassion.

Mankind has lost his freedom by being without company, and being in the company of those who had the intention to exploit him. The greatest evils of the world could be solved if brotherly love were instituted in place of competition, if charity was the virtue of the heart that was followed, instead of the vice of domination being obeyed. What, then, can be said of the liberty of women? As long as the Roman Empire existed and Europe dissolved into Western civilization, women have been regarded as inferior. The right to vote, something which has been enjoyed by men for centuries, has only been acquired in this nation in this past century. The wages between women and men have been unequal, despite their equal capability of productivity. In the mind of every intellectual, of every thinker and philosopher — except those who have arduously followed the path of truth — there has been a dogma, a social idea, that women have an inferior sort of emotion, that their thoughts are less valuable, that their affectionate is cheap, that their love is dirty. They have been made the whores of humanity, not on their own account, but on the account of their oppressors. Half of the human species has been cursed with this injustice, to be regarded as wholly inferior, in every aspect: emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. They have relied on the “scientific nature” and popularity of their understanding, just to give this sort of cruelty an aura of legitimacy. I will say this, though… Every woman ought to be free, from want, from misery, from slavery, from everything that may inhibit true independence.

The society of men has been ruled sometimes by savagery, other times by domination — one is regarded as civilized and the other not so, but in both cases they operate on brutality, cruelty, and a totally disrespect for the humanity of others. One may be called primitive, and the other may be called advanced, but both may as well be lost the understanding of compassion oc goodness as the other. A society may best be judged by the method it so decides to rear its children. As the older generation teaches the younger generation, they are deciding whether their minds shall soar freely and their hearts shall genuinely follow their own desires; or they are deciding whether they are creating filler for their cemeteries, whether they are creating foddor for their prisons, whether they are creating targets for iniquity and injustice — if a society treats its children brutally and harshly, without regard for development or kindness, the generation will grow up, and on their last breath, they will wonder why they did not follow their dreams, why they did not seek out that horizon that was shining just beyond their thoughts… but, they may wonder in vain. And what do we do in our society? We force them into schools, but the proper term may be prison. And how would you define prison? As a place you are coerced into staying, without any consent on your part? If that is a just description, then the schools in our world are nothing different than prisons, and it is their intent to form the social attitudes of children in such an atmosphere, that perhaps one day they will obediently abide by every unjust law, every decrease of their wages, every oppressive military coup. If you were to gather up all children, aged seven to seventeen, and if you were to ask them if they felt that they were treated unjustly, the answers you would receive would run the gamut. The younger ones, with less exposure to prison life, would find greater injustice in it, but since they were more impressionable, they would be more docile and accepting. The older ones, with more exposure to prison life, would find lesser injustice in it, but since they may be more intelligent — their reasoning faculties damaged by schooling — they may find more injustice in it. So, we have the condition of the children of our western nations: imprisoned, without hope, without dreams. Since the children have no souls, the nation is the epitome of a slave state.

How mankind has treated his own species, how the husband has treated his wife, how the parents have treated their children, these are all signs that perhaps injustice will prevail before justice can be sustained — perhaps the battles we fight for liberty and independence will be remember forever in the hearts of every kind person… so that when they look at the stars in a night sky, they can be sure that as they sleep, they will wake to a world that does not discriminate, a world that will not ask them to sacrifice their hopes so that they can survive. And those mornings that they wake, the future generations, with only the faintest memory of those dreams, of lovers, of family… they will truly know that life is a blessing and death is a curse. But, in all of the emancipations which have been engaged in, one large group has been left out of the liberation: the creatures of the world. They have, more or less, been treated cruelly. Their persecutors will argue whatever they can, relying on the same words of those who have oppressed men, women, and children. “They are stupid, and have no rights!” — “They cannot live autonomously!” — “They are inferior!” Every lie which has been botched against the fragile face of the woman is now thrown against that of the animal. As they argue against the rights of other species, they are but echoing every voice to oppose abolitionism. As the animals are herded, to move into slaughter houses, to be executed, their pains of agony verbally expressed are no different than those of a slave being whipped. Yet, while human slaves have only been in the millions, the animals slaughtered every year has been numbered in the billions! These creatures, whom science have finally recognized as having their emotions and their own society, not unlike human society, their lives are destroyed, because they have the unfortunate genes which made their flesh taste good to humans. No man of heart will say they are to be without our pity, and no man of thought will say they are to be without liberty. The creatures of this planet must be recognized as having rights. And this ideal must be enforced, just as men and women risked their lives to liberate slaves, just as husbands gained the courage to treat their wives with respect, just as parents gain the sanity to offer only affection and gentleness to their children. The animals of the world must be liberated. There can be no justice while there are some suffering at the merciless exploits of another.

It may have once been argued by a military advisor, that those who are the strongest have the greatest success of being the oppressors, and those who are the weakest have the strongest chance of being the oppressed. The history of civilization will prove this thesis to be true. It can be seen the countless examples. First, it was man, the stronger gender of the human species, which has more physical strength than woman. And he was the first oppressor. But then justice came; man realized that it was wrong to subject women to slavery, and women realized that it was wrong to be coerced into a life of dependence — together, the woman realized the independence of being free, and the man discovered the duty of living a nobile life. Then there are children, physically weaker and brought up to be mentally submissive, who are put into submission of their elders. In only a few countries, they have been liberated from dangerous factory conditions. In only fewer countries, if any, they have been allowed to pursue a free education. But much of the western world resides in ignorance, as it believes that force is equal to learning, that coercion is equal to education, that slavery is the same thing is knowledge. Finally, we come to the last class of the oppressed, those whose opinion have been given the smallest The creatures of the world, often times deprived of their natural habitat, and then selectively bred until they met the needs of their oppressors. It has been argued by scientists of ages past, that animals have no emotions, that they are devoid of meaning, that they are not in any way worth anything. This view has been upheld by theologians and philosophers. But it has been these same people who oppressed the female part of mankind, and it has been these same people who have oppressed the younger generations of the human species. We find that cruelty has been a distinct part of prejudice, and nothing can make us feel so sure of this than how the minds of thinkers have defended the injustices of society.
