Key-Pointers When Buying A Second Hand Car

Posted in Cars + Wagons on July 14th, 2008

Buying a car from an individual or from a local car dealer is one tedious task if the objective is to purchase a second car that is still in good running condition. A buyer would never trade his hard-earned money with just a complete wasted used car. Whether new or used, when buying a car, it should be treated with the same importance and value.

There are things to take into consideration before buying the car and these are:

1. Educate yourself as a consumer
2. Prepare a list of your needs. Prioritize between the necessities and the wants.
3. Determine the budget and the kind of car that would best fit.
4. Make a selection by models and types. Narrowing them will be helpful.
5. Research both online and offline by dealers.
6. Know the value of the second hand car in the market.
7. Research the Vehicle Identification Numbers and history.
8. Take a mechanic when checking the car whether buying from a friend or a dealer.
9. Never shy away from asking questions.
10. If there’s a gut feeling about it not being good, don’t be afraid to walk away.

Bringing a mechanic along is always a good strategy. Make sure your mechanic inspects the totality of the car, from the history down to its last screw. It should be parked on a level spot. You should make certain that it was driven for about an hour. This should make it a good time to make the inspection. Always make it on a well lit surrounding and in broad daylight.

How to inspect it thoroughly:

Checking the exterior. Walk around to see if there is damage to the body. The corners of the car should be shaken and bounced up and down to see if the shock absorbers are still in good condition. Make sure that the wheel bearings do not make any sound when trying to pull the front tires by tugging them. Open the doors lift the hood and the trunk to see if all the rubber seals are still in place. This will also tell if there’s anything loose around the hinges. Check for signs of repaint. There will be difference in the color because shops can never duplicate the original paint of the car. Ask someone to turn on all the lights outside of the car and look if all are working. Cars with only 30,000 miles of travel must still have its original tires. Beware if you find a car with only a few miles of travel but has new tires. When the test drive is done, check the discs of the brakes, this should still be clean and smooth. Check the windshield for cracks.

Checking the Interior. Though it sounds odd, smell the insides of the car. Sniff under mats and the carpet. If it smells like mildew then it’s a sign that there is a leak somewhere or that the car may have undergone flood damage. Switch on the air-conditioning to make sure that it really turns the whole inside of the car cold. Next, try the heater. Try out all lights inside as well and never forget to blow the horn. Also try all the seat adjustments. The upholstery should still be in good shape too. There will be a lot more to check and here is where the mechanic can help the buyer.

Looking inside the trunk. Once more, smell the insides and check for any signs of leaks. Make sure that some basic car tools are still present for the new user.

Checking under the hood. Feel the wiring for any cracks or brittleness. Squeeze the hoses and the fan belt for any cuts and possible electrical tape patches. Do not take off the cap of the radiator until its cool enough. The greenish color indicates a good condition where the coolant is. Beware of stains and dirty-whitish color on the radiator. Again, let the rest be checked by the mechanic like the batteries.

Checking under the car. Lie down if you must and use an emergency light to see the engine underneath. Feel any signs of residue. Check the pipes and examine any possibility of heavy rusting.

Do the Test Drive. The owner or dealer should not stop a buyer from going over about twenty minutes of test drive. This is a special time to thoroughly look for any problems with the air-conditioning, heater, steering wheel, brakes, transmission, and most importantly, the comfort. Feel everything; it’s okay to try it on a hump or a slight bumpy road to really experience the performance. Listen carefully to check any rattles. Have a pen and paper, flashlight, gloves, magnet, towel, blanket and even CD or tape when checking a car out.

Tinted Windows Offer Protection From The Sun’s Rays

Posted in Cars + Wagons on May 17th, 2008

Tinted windows of vehicles are, for some people, the best way to go. However, there is more to tinted windows than what meets the eye. When windows are tinted, they also offer protection from the harmful rays of the sun. For most vehicles though, this is just an added option.

A Ford vehicle’s window, or any vehicle’s window for that matter, could be tinted through the application of a specially designed film which is constructed to be thin. It is applied on the inside of the windows. If you want to have tinted windows, you can do so with some assistance from businesses and companies who offer such a service. However, it would be wise to know that there still are rules and regulations in the US with regards to tinting windows and it should be specifically a minimum of 70 percent visible light transmission for both the windshield and the windows.

So how do you tint a window? It would be best for you to start scouting for a shop, business, or company that has skilled and professional workers who could do the job well. If you have no idea as per where you can find a good window tinting service, you can ask your fellow drivers, your friends, or even your car dealer for assistance. They might have some ideas on this.

Once you have a list of those shops, start visiting them and ask for appraisals. That way, you would know just how much you would be needing to have your windows tinted. At the same time, try to keep an eye on the facilities to see if everything is clean and orderly. Ask for their range of tints so you could actually know that you have tints to choose from. Also ask if the shop is a member of the International Window Film Association.

After comparing everything, be sure that you select the shop that you find as the most comfortable and the shop that you think would give your vehicle a good service.

Tinted windows do have their benefits. For some people, it is more of just adding a sportier appeal. However, studies have concluded that tinted windows assist in reducing the glare of the suns rays and in the process helps prevent eye fatigue. It also keeps the car and the occupants inside cooler. The interior of the car is also protected from damage and the colors are blocked from fading much too quickly.

Driver’s Education Games

Posted in Cars + Wagons on May 14th, 2008

Most students might find it very boring to attend driver education classes either in school or online. Most websites just list the points that the student is supposed to remember by heart without providing proper examples so as to enable the student to retain all that was studied.

Even though some websites provide pictures and data together to make the content more interesting, it might still be a problem to concentrate for 6 hours before taking the exam. A few websites have ventured toward providing a unique way of learning. These website provides the courses in form of a game and learning activity. They have quizzes that contain multiple-choice questions, true-false questions, pop-up questions, multiple correct questions, fill-in the blanks, initial answer questions, short answer questions, and essay type answer questions. The quiz results can be tracked to check how the student fared in the exam. They also have interactive pictures to make learning a lot more interesting.

Driver’s education games are a pseudo-simulation of the drivers’ test. The player has to follow the rules and drive. They must play well so as to no get too many demerits so as to avoid being criticized by the instructor.

Most websites provide data such as the speed limits, the rules regarding the stop signs, parking and signaling will be provided in form of tables or graphs for easier understanding and retention. One such website which provides the driver’s education game is www.venisproductions.com

World Auto Production Forecast

Posted in Cars + Wagons on May 3rd, 2008

Predicting the future is a risky proposition often filled with guesstimates and theories based on current events and hoped for consequences. At the same time, automakers are busy doing just that in anticipation of future consumer demands, emerging markets, fuel availability, and so much more. So, with all of that in mind and knowing that only God knows the future, here are some of my predictions concerning worldwide automotive production circa 2015.

Consolidation General Motors, Toyota, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Peugeot/Nissan, Honda, Hyundai, Volkswagen, and some other manufacturers are likely to snap up competitors, especially in emerging markets. Nope, I do not see the end of GM or Ford. Instead, I see both automakers concentrating on what they do best: making money overseas. The big factor in all of this will be the impact that Chinese built cars will have on local markets. If the cars are fairly well made and priced below the prevailing market rate, look for several companies to join forces in a bid simply to survive. Look for low priced Indian built cars to be sold worldwide beginning early in the next decade.

Emerging Markets China and India are the emerging markets of today. Look for several African nations to be the market for tomorrow provided further internecine violence doesn’t quell growth. The Central American nations and several South American countries will also benefit from strong growth.

New Fuels Hybrid gas/electric technology will only be a blip on the screen once hydrogen cars enter production. Honda is probably the closest to building production hydrogen powered cars with GM and Toyota not too far behind. Once the first hydrogen powered cars enter production, the world will see a revolution in automotive technology not seen since the advent of the internal combustion engine. Expect government mandates to ensure that every automaker has access to hydrogen technology.

New Technology Think green! Besides hydrogen power, the actual vehicle body is likely to change significantly too. Depending on availability, lightweight composite materials will be incorporated to help reduce costs and lower weight. Truly “smart” cars will arrive that will anticipate crashes, prevent roll over, and completely shut down or takeover control if the driver is incapacitated. Look for further gains in seating comfort, sound systems, lighting, and air management.

New Transportation Although the personal passenger vehicle is not likely to ever disappear, newer versions of the same will show up especially in crowded cities. Three wheel cars, car/motorcycle hybrids, and vehicles that can be hooked up to one another [in train formation] will be produced for certain markets.

Of course, if the world is embroiled in a major war at any time, all of this will come to naught. Still, what many identify as “auto production” will change radically perhaps as soon as the next 3 or 4 years. I can’t wait, can you?

Ford Fusion v. Lincoln Zephyr: Worth the Premium?

Posted in Cars + Wagons on April 4th, 2008

Not too many people compare models from the same manufacturer, it is simply something that just isn’t done. Still, when the models are similar enough in development, yet very different in price, the question to be asked about the more expensive car is this: is it worth the premium? Both the Ford Fusion and Lincoln Zephyr share the same platform along with the Mercury Milan. The base price differential for the two models is nearly ten thousand dollars, quite a big difference for the two cars. Is the Zephyr overpriced? Or, is the Fusion that much more of a better buy? Or, perhaps the answer lies somewhere in between. Let’s check out the two cars and see how they compare.

The Ford Fusion is a welcome addition to the Ford line up as the venerable but aging Taurus leaves the fleet. Along with the full size Five Hundred sedan and the Freestyle crossover vehicle, these new models are part of the overhaul changes put in place by Ford to get the brand moving again.

Ford tapped its relationship with Mazda to build the Fusion. Borrowing the well regarded Mazda 6 platform, the Fusion, Zephyr, and Milan all share the same platform and many of the components. As mentioned earlier, the Lincoln Zephyr is priced nearly ten thousand dollars more than the Fusion.

So, what are the differences between the Fusion and Zephyr? Unfortunately, not that much. Both cars come equipped with a 3.0L Duratec V6 paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. In each model the engine produces the same 221 h.p. and the same performance results are achieved. This isn’t bad, but it is disappointing that Ford engineers did not tweak the Zephyr enough to distinguish it from its more pedestrian sibling.

While under the hood differences are not present, there are some differences in the ride. As typical with all Lincoln products, the Zephyr’s suspension system is tuned for a gentler, more luxurious feel. According to Lincoln, the steering has also been modified to give it a above average assist.

Next, the interior has been upgraded to include real walnut trim, a modified dashboard with sport display, and plush front bucket seats. The exterior possesses the ubiquitous big Lincoln grille as well as larger than life tail lights and keyless entry.

The Zephyr also offers a broader standard equipment list than the Ford, including a premium sound system, power heated front seats, and traction control. Still, a the top of the line Fusion SEL offers similar equipment options for a much lower price.

Ultimately, what it comes down to for potential buyers is this: would you be satisfied with a fully loaded Fusion SEL or are you willing to pay a premium for the Lincoln with a more luxurious trim level and a softer ride? A judgment call that only you can make despite the huge price differences between models that vary little from each other.
