God Bless The Refrigerator Magnet!

Posted in Public Relations on May 25th, 2008

Ah, my very favorite promotional product of all, the refrigerator magnet. They are my favorite, because they are so extremely inexpensive, and extremely effective in getting your company name seen in countless locations.

They don’t make the greatest commission for a salesman of advertising specialties, but I can’t stop myself from recommending these little beauties first and foremost to my new customers and prospects. And the reason is so simple. They WORK! I’ve yet to approach anyone in any kind of business where I don’t feel that a refrigerator magnet will be effective advertising. Granted, some are more suited than others, but I still maintain that they’d be of use to any business.

Domino’s Pizza is notorious for giving out a magnet with deliveries that includes their logo and the phone number of the local store. I worked for Domino’s when I was a young guy, as a delivery driver. Often, whenever sales would dip a little, or the manager was bucking for a prize, we would go “door hanging”. Boy did these door hangers produce strong results. Inexpensive marketing that had proven itself time and time again. My fellow employees and I would spend time in a “slow” neighborhood, hanging these on the door knobs of as many homes and apartments as we could, and the results would be immediate. Sales would shoot through the roof! If a crew went out “door hanging” you could count on a lot of calls coming in that evening from the area you’d just targeted, for the next 3 days. The problem with these door hangers is, they’re paper, and they wind up in the trash, rather quickly.

A refrigerator magnet, almost always … always winds up on the refrigerator. And there it stays, for a long, long time. What other conventional advertising stays in a home that long? A commercial, printed advertisement, a radio address, nothing … stays as long as the magnet. And no matter what is put on the fridge, be it your child’s neatest drawing of a hairy fire truck, or their lunch menu at school, what’s on the very top? The beautiful, blessed magnet sporting YOUR company logo!

Let’s say you own a heating and a/c company. You get a call from a referral, or yellow page ad. You show up, fix the problem the customer is happy with the work you’ve done, the price you charged, and then you or one of your service technicians leaves. Three, or four years go by, and this same customer’s a/c breaks down. He says to his wife, “honey, what was the name of that company we used last time?” Who can remember that long ago? Had the customer been left with a refrigerator magnet, had the service tech actually physically went and put it on this customer’s fridge the last time he was over, the number would be right there waiting for him. What if this time, he’s going to need his complete a/c unit replaced? That’s one heck of a sale to miss out on.

Now most men will probably gripe at me for this one, but c’est la vie. Let’s say you’re a florist. A young teen boy calls to get a mum for his girlfriend for homecoming or a corsage for prom or roses for Valentines. You deliver the item(s) with a refrigerator magnet. Months roll by, and the teen girl’s father wakes up and realizes TODAY is his anniversary, and he didn’t buy his wife a gift! Trust me; his immediate thought goes to flowers. The old faithful, the default at any time, flowers. He’s going to have them delivered to her work. He remembers the “free delivery” comment on the magnet of your shop, and goes right to it. He calls the number and places his order. Without the magnet, he would have called AAAAmanda’s Flowers in the yellow pages.

Online businesses can benefit too. Now if promoting a web site, one would immediately think to sell a promotional item that would sit by a computer, but I disagree. If you sent a magnet to an existing customer, it’d wind up on his or her fridge. A friend, family member, or delivery person could see it, and inquire about the site. In addition, magnets will adhere to most automobiles. You can carry them around with you, and put them on cars, for focused advertising. I have one client that does this, he’s in real estate. Often he’ll stop by a prospect’s home, and if no one answers the door, yet a car is in the driveway, he puts a magnet on the car as he leaves. It’s produced positive results for him, he says. And he’s gotten word of mouth advertising from those people as well. I’d be willing to bet that it came from friends and family seeing the magnet on the former customer’s refrigerator, or toolbox, beer keg cooler, etc.

In my opinion, no business is unable to benefit from this item. So if you own a company and you’re looking to advertise, consider the refrigerator magnet. They’re inexpensive, and last a long, long time. Plus the Dominos one on your fridge is lonely, I’m sure.

Browsing Paranoia

Posted in Living With Technology on May 25th, 2008

Are we overdoing personal security in our day to day uses of
computers — especially when we are going online?

I notice that I have developed strange behavior after visiting
secure sites, buying something online, or going to a website
where I needed to enter a username and password to gain access.
When I am done, I log out. But, before going to another website,
I shut down the browser and then restart before visiting another
website.

This level of browsing paranoia stems from the fear that if I
jump from one website to another, there is a risk my username
and password or other information could be grabbed by the second
site.

It does not matter if I am using MSIE, Firefox or Opera. My
behavior is the same. Incidentally, I use Opera more often now
that it has dropped ads. My behavior is the same. Incidentally,
I use Opera more often now that it has dropped ads. See Opera
On My Laptop
.

The thing about my odd browsing behavior is that it is based on
the idea that a malicious website could get user names and
passwords for my previous session. I feel like I have read about
that a thousand times. However, the next site is almost always
from my list of favorites. Unless there has been a change of
ownership or the site has been hacked, I believe those sites can
be trusted. After all, I have accounts at some.

Make Sure Browsers Are Fully Patched

Unfortunately, that statement reinforces the fact that we must
make sure that our browsers are fully patched at all times. Many
high profile sites have been hacked and many tricks used by
criminal minds to divert us to the dark corners of the web. I
try to be careful to use the latest, fully patched version of
each browser at all times. Especially MSIE.

At the same time, I mostly browse the internet from a computer
using the Windows XP operating system. The installed firewall is
turned on. All listening ports are closed. This is the default
on new versions of windows. But, if you are reinstalling an old
version, make sure you are not connected to the internet until
after you turn the firewall on and block all ports.

Post Install Security

When I installed windows, I visited the Gibson Research Corporation
website and ran three important programs:
http://www.grc.com/unpnp/unpnp.htm“>Unplug ‘n Pray, DECOMbobulator, and Shoot The
Messenger. These steps created a baseline for security on my
system. These post-install routines are easy to do. Take only a
few minutes. And eliminate a host of potential worries.

For a second line of defense, I would recommend SpyWareBlaster by
from Javacool Software
. The program tweaks some internal
Internet Explorer settings to block the installation of known
spyware (and similar threats) installers.

However, even with this layered approach to security I still
close my browser when I am switching from secure to insecure
sites — especially after buying something online!

Hyperactivity vs ADD - What’s The Difference?

Posted in Best Templates Resources on May 25th, 2008

A common misconception, when it comes to Attention Deficit
Disorder, is that it is one in the same with hyperactivity.
However, this is far from the truth. While people with ADD may
exhibit signs of hyperactivity, it is not an inherent trait of
the disorder and often does not occur with sufferers of ADD.

Hyperactivity is a general term referring to excessive and/or
pathological activeness. This term is often used erroneously for
an active person that does not meet the excessive criteria. It
is important to understand that all children are active to a
certain extent, and that some are even extremely active.
However, this does not necessarily constitute hyperactivity. A
hyperactive person will seem to be driven to movement, making it
almost impossible to sit still. If sitting, they will often
fidget or talk excessively as a countermeasure. Hyperactivity is
often difficult to assess in adults; however, children are much
easier to diagnose.

Attention Deficit Disorder, on the other hand, is exhibited by
inattentiveness, impulsiveness, and distractibility, but not
necessarily hyperactivity. A child that suffers from ADD may
have difficulty completing assignments, paying attention, and/or
waiting their turn. In order for any of these behaviors to
constitute a disorder, they must be extreme, create difficulty
in completing daily activities, and not be appropriate behavior
for the age group of the child. They must also occur for an
extended period of time, at least six months and be identifiable
prior to the age of 7 and continue thereafter.

However, some children with ADD also have hyperactivity,
demonstrated as excessive fidgeting, running, and jumping at
inappropriate times. They often seem to have an inability to be
still. If a child exhibits hyperactivity in addition to
Attention Deficit Disorder, they are often termed “ADHD”:
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. While many people
assume the term ADD is an antiquated version of ADHD, they
actually refer to two different types of disorders.

In all, there are typically three variations of ADD or ADHD.
These are (1) inattentive type, (2) hyperactive-impulsive type,
and (3) combination. Obviously the inattentive type exhibits a
difficulty in paying attention and completing activities, but is
not hyperactive. These children tend to be more difficult to
diagnose. On the other hand, the hyperactive-impulsive type is
extremely active and has a difficulty controlling their
behavior. Of course, the third type is a combination of the two
previous types and displays inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and
impulsiveness.

in beautiful mountain settings and range from brand new to
rustic charm. What more could you want from your mountain cabin.

You may be thinking rustic charm may mean old fashioned but
today many mountain cabins are fully equipped with all the
latest mod cons such as wonderful log fires, hot tubs, cable TV

a mountain cabin, is unsurprisingly, the mountains. I suppose
that goes without saying that you would expect mountains next to
a mountain cabin, after all it seems sensible, but until you
have visited some of the best places to vacation in the US you
may not have been to the mountains before and boy are you
missing something.

So try us folks up here in the mountains where the air is
clean, the views are superb, the food is great and the
activities are unparalleled.

Mountain cabins come in all sizes from single one bed roomed
mountain cabins which are great for single couples, especially
anyone on their honeymoon, to large 10 bedroom affairs which are
great for group activities such as team building ventures.

One of the biggest attractions in vacationing in a beautiful
mountain cabin is the peace and quiet you can find in a secluded
cabin, yet most things are on your doorstep. You are so close to
nature, with trails to walk and hike, short backpacking trips,
skiing in the winter months, lakes for swimming, sailing and
fishing and just plain good fresh air.

So stop thinking about mountain cabins, stop planning to rent a
mountain cabin, stop dreaming of having a vacation in one and
just do it. Book one and book one this week. Plan your next
vacation in your own mountain cabin in some of the best mountain
scenery in the US.

FSBO Sellers - The Real Estate Agent Is Not Your Enemy

Posted in Internet Real Estate Resources on May 24th, 2008

If you are selling your home without a real estate agent, you need to realize the agents in your area are not your enemy. In fact, they may prove very useful in moving your property.

FSBO Sellers - The Real Estate Agent Is Not Your Enemy

A common mistake made when people decide to list their home for sale by owner is to assume real estate agents are to be avoided. This is a mistake for a number of reasons and can significantly hinder your efforts to sell the property. Consider the following.

A majority of buyers will use a real estate agent to locate and make offers on real estate. I am sure this is hardly a shocking revelation to you. Given this fact, many FSBO sellers make the mistake of treating real estate agents rudely. If you receive a call from an agent, you need to realize the person offering their services may be the same person that calls a week later with an interested buyer. If you burn bridges by being rude or hanging up on real estate agents, you run the risk of missing out on potential buyers.

Even if a real estate agent does not bring a buyer, they can still be of assistance to a FSBO seller. Put bluntly, the real estate agents contacting you expect you to eventually give up trying to sell your property on your own. Although incorrect, this assumption leads them to view you as a potential client down the road. The negative aspect of this is they will continually contact you. Ah, but there is a positive aspect as well.

A real estate agent that sniffs a potential client can be very helpful. To generate credibility with you, they will give you an astounding amount of help for free. Many realtors, for instance, will provide you with all the contract documentation you need for the sale and purchase transaction for the property including a purchase agreement, escrow instructions, deeds, disclosures and a list of documents you will need. Some will even go so far as to provide you with free brochures for your home. Now, does that sound like an enemy?

Make no mistake, a real estate agent will help you because they believe you will eventually become a client. You probably will not, but there is little reason to view them as an enemy in your efforts.

If you are paying attention, we’re talking about best friends! It is all so important to recognize and value one of the greatest unique gifts on our planet–best friends! They are truly invaluable and can save you literally hundreds of dollars in hair replacements from being pulled out. Now, it is also important to realize that these best friends are a valuable tool and resource, and not to be taken for naught. You have a responsibility to preserve them.

Make sure to respect not only their time, but also their firm standpoint when you ask for their opinion. Treat your best friends like the worthy endeavor they are, and guarantee their safety. After all, it’s difficult enough to find and keep good friends–much less best friends.

Finding a great best friend gift is always a worthy concept. Best friends are great to confide with during a life-stressor. Diabetes Relief And Prevention Through Exercise

Posted in University of Health on May 23rd, 2008

Diabetes is something that can be treated and even prevented
very effectively with exercise. Most people are aware of the
many other benefits of exercise but the one that could have the
greatest impact on the health-care system is the prevention and
relief of this health problem.

Diabetes comes in two main types. These are type I and type II.

Type I occurs when your pancreas is producing too little insulin
or in some cases not producing any at all. If you already have
type I you of course have the daily task of injecting insulin
into your body in order to control your glucose levels.

This is not an enjoyable thing to do. If you currently do not
have type I diabetes then learn to prevent it through exercise
and healthy living. The alternative may be daily injections for
the rest of your life.

The second main type of diabetes is known as Type II. Many
people also refer to it as adult onset diabetes.

If you are suffering from the symptoms of Type II it’s due to
you pancreas not being able to make enough insulin to control
glucose levels. It can also occur when your cells do not respond
properly to insulin.

This is commonly known as insulin resistance.

One of the most effective ways of dealing with insulin
resistance is through exercise and good nutritional habits. A
large number of people with this type of diabetes are
over-weight.

Therefore, weight control is a must. If you are not active,
over-eat and become obese, you have a very high risk of being
afflicted with type II. In most cases, simply adding in
exercise, including both weight training and cardiovascular
exercise, along with good eating habits is enough to prevent
type II diabetes.

Only in rare cases will this not work, and medication is needed.

With type II diabetes there are a number of other health
problems that can then occur, including; high cholesterol,
obesity, and hypertension. Exercise has a very positive effect
on Type II for improving insulin sensitivity.

Ninety percent of all people with this health problem actually
have type II, and exercise will help your body to process
glucose at a quicker rate, lowering any high blood sugar
symptoms you may have.

The intensity of your exercise session also plays a role. A more
intense exercise program will help your body to utilize glucose
quicker. However, high intensity does not mean faster. There is
a difference.

Obviously before beginning any type of exercise program,
regardless of what type of
diabetes you have, you should check with your doctor. There
are many differences between exercise for different types of
diabetes that you need to be aware of before starting.

There can be certain dangers resulting from injecting insulin
just before you begin to exercise. One situation that can occur
is the risk of hypoglycemia or insulin shock during the exercise
session.

Here are some general rules to keep in mind when exercising if
you are type I: allow for enough rest between weight training
sets to avoid high blood pressure symptoms; avoid lifting heavy
weights or going to failure on each set; when doing cardio,
avoid high impact exercises such as running outside; always
ensure that you have carbohydrates in your system before you
start and a supply of them nearby as well.

You may begin to feel shaky, disoriented, hungry, anxious or
become irritable if you allow your blood sugar levels to get too
low. Having a carbohydrate snack or drink nearby will help
prevent these symptoms very quickly.

Blood glucose analyzers are very effective tools to use when
exercising. You can test your blood sugar to ensure it’s not at
a level below 80 - 100 mg/dl range and not above 250 mg/dl.

During your post-exercise recovery period, around three to five
hours after you complete your exercise session, so-called
diabetic diets can be beneficial. Diabetic diets should consist
of a good amount of carbohydrates to prevent hypoglycemia.

Exercise has its greatest impact on people with type II diabetes
because of its positive effects on insulin sensitivity. Proper
exercise and sound nutritional habits work considerably well for
type II diabetics.

Consistency is critical in the prevention of type II diabetes.
You can’t expect to exercise now and then, and prevent it. You
need to make exercise part of your life if it’s going to be
effective.

Bridge Loans - From One Home to the Next

Posted in Internet Real Estate Resources on May 22nd, 2008

You’ve lived in your home for some time and circumstances such as an expanding family mean you need a new one. This brings up the subject of bridge loans.

From Here to There

You have two basic options when you are considering selling one home to move to another. The first option is to sell your home, make sure it closes and then find a new one. This is by far the safest option.

The second option is to buy and sell at the same time. Typically, you try to close on your sale around the time you close on the purchase. Theoretically, this allows you to move seamlessly from one home to the next. This is an option rife with potential problems. What happens if there are problems with the sale of your home such as escrow issues or the buyer failing to get a loan? Suddenly, you are looking at being the owner of two homes. Disaster has struck since you’re undoubtedly using proceeds from the sale of your old home to fund the new purchase. With no sale, you have no funds and sleepless nights follow.

Bridge loans are often touted as a solution for this problem. In theory, a lender will provide you with a loan to cover the gap in time between the sale and purchase of the two homes. While bridge loans do accomplish this, they should be considered a last resort for a few reasons.

First, bridge loans are obscenely expensive. You’re in a tight spot and the lender knows it. Points and interest rates are going to be shocking. The lender knows there is a higher chance you will default on the loan, so you can expect to pay for the risk up front.

The second problem with bridge loans concerns your old home. Inevitably, you will anticipate a fairly quick sale of your home, but what if it doesn’t happen? Suddenly, you are making payments on two homes. Few people can afford to make such payments and you can quickly run out of cash.

Financing a move from one home to a new one can be a tricky process. Make sure you put a lot of thought into it or you could be in for a very bad surprise.
